DESCRIPTION:The 2011 Mid-Atlantic Environmental Literacy Summit will provid
e a forum for continuing the important dialogue between federal\, state\,
and non-governmental leaders about the future of environmental and science
\, technology\, engineering\, and math (STEM) education in the mid-Atlanti
c region. The Summit will be convened on November 2\, 2011 at the centrall
y located National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase\, MD\, and w
ill be followed by an Environmental Literacy Working Session on November 3
\, 2011.\n\nThe mid-Atlantic region is leading the nation in implementing
sound policy that ensures our students will graduate environmentally liter
ate citizens. To support these efforts and in response to the Chesapeake B
ay Executive Order strategy\, federal agencies are in the process of devel
 oping a comprehensive\, inter-agency plan to better coordinate\, align\, a
nd deliver valuable programs and content to our state partners. The state
affiliates of the North American Association for Environmental Education\,
who represent the non-governmental partners in the states\, have also com
mitted to furthering this shared strategy with their own commitments. This
regional partnership is unprecedented and will serve as a national model
for collaboration. To acknowledge this unique partnership and open a perio
d of public comment on the federal strategy\, a press conference hosted by
NOAA and other key agencies will kick-off the Summit. Conversations and p
resentations on the integral connection between science and environmental
education\, next generation science standards\, national priorities for ST
EM education\, US ED-funded initiatives supporting Environmental Literacy
plans\, inspiring students through exposure to the natural worked\, and sc
hool grounds and operations as environmental teaching tools are also being
  planned.
