DESCRIPTION:Wetland Workgroup meeting on Wednesday\, May 29\, from 10:30 –
12:45 in the Fish Shack at the Chesapeake Bay Program office in Annapolis.
This is an important meeting which will focus on key issues related to we
tland restoration. \n\n We have been asked to prepare a sta
ndard protocol for verifying the restoration or creation of wetlands that
are being reported to the Chesapeake Bay Program as BMPs for nutrient and/
or sediment removal credit. The current draft is attached. It has been a
challenge to prepare this protocol due to lack of response to earlier dra
fts\, as well as the varied approaches used by practitioners to meet their
own programmatic needs. The Program is requesting a final protocol from
the Work Group by July and your input is critical.\n\n Anot
her topic related to restoration is permitting. The challenges of restora
tion permitting was the focus of the Habitat Goal Implementation Team held
at Cacapon State Park in November 2012. We will be providing updates on
the status of actions and recommendations made during the meeting.\n \n
The final major topic is wetland rehabilitation. These are pract
ices which 'restore' previously existing functions in a degraded wetland.
The practices are not presently part of the Bay model for nutrient reduct
ion. We will have an opportunity to encourage inclusion of these practice
s in the next version of the model\, but will have to provide documentatio
 n for reductions.
