Shadbush

Amelanchier canadensis

The shadbush is a small tree with:

• Rounded, elongated, fine-toothed leaves that are alternately arranged on branches.
• Clusters of white, five-petaled flowers.
• Reddish-purple fruits.

Shadbushes can grow to 25 feet tall.

Where does the shadbush grow?

Shadbushes grows along the edge of forested wetlands and in thinly wooded areas. Flowers bloom from March through June, coinciding with the return of shad to their spawning grounds in freshwater rivers and streams (hence the name “shadbush”).
