Chesapeake NEMO (Network for Education of Municipal Officials) is a partnership network that helps local communities foster well-planned growth, preserve water quality and protect natural areas. Chesapeake NEMO provides communities with educational programs about the links between land use and natural resources. It also delivers free technical help and leverages financial assistance to help communities implement sound planning and watershed protection.
NEMO Education
Chesapeake NEMO provides free workshops to help local governments and their stakeholders link land, water and growth. Workshops, which take place in communities, are tailored to local needs to maximize the opportunity for positive follow-up.
Chesapeake NEMO currently offers the following workshops:
- Linking Land, Water and Growth is an introductory workshop that focuses on the relationship of land use and growth to a community's natural resources and quality of life.
- Planning the Direction of Your Community is a companion to the introductory workshop. It focuses on the choices all communities face, as well as the tools and approaches a community can use for setting—and reaching—its direction.
- Other custom-designed sessions can be arranged to address more specific topics.
NEMO Technical Assistance
Chesapeake NEMO provides technical assistance to help communities with locally supported initiatives on well-planned growth, preserving water quality and protecting natural areas. Assistance teams provide communities with help in three broad areas:
- Creating your community's vision and goals for the future.
- Assessing your community's valuable natural resources to make sure they are maintained.
- Managing your community's future with tools and ongoing strategies like low-impact development standards and natural resource and conservation planning.
NEMO Financial Assistance
Chesapeake NEMO works closely with several partners' funding programs to link technical assistance and educational workshops with funding for locally supported initiatives.
