To monitor the bacteriological quality of Maryland's shellfish harvesting waters to assure adequate public health protection from shelstock unsafe for human consumption. To assist in the identification and elimination of pollution sources in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.

To protect the health of consumers and to facilitate the iinterstate sale of products by the Virginia shellfish and crab meat industry.

To determine short and long-term trends in the distribution and abundance of bateriological populations iin the lower York River.

To evaluate the environmental impact of the Susquehanna SES by comparing preoperational (pre-1983) and operational periphyton and phytoplankton data.
