Goal

Enhance or rehabilitate 89,492 acres by 2010.

Additional Information
  • Wetlands serve multiple ecological functions. Restoring and enhancing wetlands throughout the watershed can provide critical wildlife habitat for many diverse species including finfish, shellfish, amphibians, birds and mammals.  In addition to habitat, wetlands also help clean the water by filtering excess nutrients and sediments.
  • Wetlands are “nature’s speed bumps”, acting to slow storm surges associated with natural disasters such as hurricanes.
  • Wetlands enhancements lead to improvement of one or more selected functions (i.e. water quality, flood water retention, or wildlife habitat.) Wetlands rehabilitations repair the natural/historic functions of a degraded wetland. These activities to not account for acreage gains.
  • Projects that result in the actual gain of wetland acreage are tracked separately for purposes of clarity and accuracy.
