Overview

This presentation will provide information and guidance for landowners interested in implementing riparian buffers on their property. A manual, recently completed by the City of Lancaster, will be presented as a user-friendly guide for landowners to learn how to implement and install riparian buffers that provide multiple benefits. Studies have shown that adding trees and a healthy, diverse natural landscape adjacent to waterways improves the water quality of our streams and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay. The multi-functioning planting strategies described in this manual include approaches that improve the aesthetics, improve wildlife habitat, reduce maintenance, allow for views of the stream and provide an opportunity for harvesting berries, nuts, and flowers. The guide is meant to provide information about the functional benefits of riparian buffers along with user-friendly strategies on how to plan and install a buffer in a variety of typical conditions. These strategies are meant to allow even landowners without horticultural knowledge or planting experience, to understand the benefits and install the buffers either with the assistance of a professional, or on their own.
