Roughly 500 Baltimore eighth graders paddle the Patapsco River—many for the first time—in the Kids and Kayaks program.

Baltimore middle school students get a paddling lesson—a first for many—and learn about centuries of human impact in their hometown with Kids in Kayaks, a program funded by the National Park Service and the Baltimore National Heritage Area. Molly Gallant of Baltimore City Recreation and Parks describes the program and what it means for children to see their city from the Patapsco River.
