Every year, the retired state senator measures the river's health with his "sneaker index"

Retired Maryland State Senator Bernie Fowler recalls life on the Patuxent River. Inspired by his childhood memories of clear water, he leads the annual Senator Bernie Fowler's Patuxent River Wade In to measure how deep he can walk in the water before he can't see his feet. His personal "sneaker index" is a unique way to gauge the health of the river and raise awareness for restoration efforts.
