From the Field: Trash Trawl hauls microplastics from Bay waters

A unique study will help researchers learn the amount and type of plastic pollution in the Chesapeake Bay

Julie Lawson, Director of Trash Free Maryland, leads a research effort to determine the extent of plastic pollution in the Chesapeake Bay. Lawson, along with Stiv Wilson, Campaign Coordinator of The Story of Stuff Project, and Dr. Chelsea Rochman, an ecologist and postdoctoral fellow with the University of California, Davis, conducted a survey using a manta trawl at 60 locations from Baltimore’s Middle River to the mouth of the Potomac River in the Chesapeake Bay.
