Chesapeake Bay Program Photo/Graphic Usage Policy

Permission to use images from www.chesapeakebay.net and the Chesapeake Bay Program’s Flickr photography archive must be obtained in writing from the Chesapeake Bay Program Communications Office. Chesapeake Bay Program content is restricted to noncommercial, educational or editorial use by agencies, organizations, educational institutions, individuals and media outlets.

Requestors are encouraged to browse the Chesapeake Bay Program’s photography archive on Flickr, and to list each photograph’s corresponding Flickr page URL when requesting one or more images. The archive is organized into collections to assist with searching.

An attribution must appear with the content, either adjacent to the image, at the end of a presentation or with other production credits. The formatting of the attribution may vary as long as the "Chesapeake Bay Program" is included. Requestors are welcome to list the photographer or illustrator, in addition.

Interested parties must request content by sending an email to requests@chesapeakebay.net with the following information:

  1. Name of organization requesting permission.

  2. Contact person including mailing address, phone number and email address.

  3. The URL of the page where each photo appears, and a short identifying description (please avoid sending images as email attachments).

  4. Intended use of CBP content (e.g., article, exhibit, publication, presentation).

  5. Indicate if changes beyond basic cropping would be made to the image, such as the adding or removing of elements.

The Chesapeake Bay Program retains the rights to most but not all images used on www.chesapeakebay.net. For materials provided by third parties, requestors should instead contact the copyright holder identified in the image attribution.

Additionally, some types of usage may also require the permission of individuals whose likenesses appear in photography, video or other content. Requestors are responsible for ensuring all necessary permissions and releases are secured before publishing.
