The United State Coast Guard (USCG) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are charged with enforcing and administering a number of laws to protect the environment. Specific agency responsibilities are defined by statute, regulations, and the Federal Region III Oil and Hazardous Substances Pollution contingency Plan. Inland, the EPA has the lead for spill response, while, in coastal waters, the USCG has the lead responsibility.
