Tuckahoe Creek is a gentle country stream on Maryland’s Eastern Shore

When people think of exploring Maryland's Eastern Shore, massive open bays and sprawling tidal rivers usually come to mind. But if you head inland through Queen Anne’s, Caroline and Talbot counties, you will find Tuckahoe Creek—a quiet, winding country stream that offers an entirely different kind of escape. 

Tuckahoe Creek is a 21.5-mile freshwater tributary that starts as a small stream in Queen Anne’s County and flows south to the Choptank River, a major tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. Close to its headwaters, the creek flows through all 500 acres of Tuckahoe State Park, making for a scenic paddle with plenty of wildlife viewing. In the upper portion of the park, the creek is particularly narrow with trees on either side of the banks connecting to form a dark canopy overhead. 

Beyond Tuckahoe State Park, Tuckahoe Creek continues south where it widens and flows through various landscapes. At one point, Tuckahoe Creek winds through the place where famed abolitionist and orator Frederick Douglass was born. In his memoirs, Douglass vividly describes his formative childhood years spent navigating the secluded fields and swampy stream valleys of the creek. A variety of organizations, such as ShoreRivers and Envision the Choptank help protect Tuckahoe Creek by restoring eroded stream banks and planting protective forest buffers. According to the 2025 Choptank River Report Card, the Tuckahoe Creek scored a “C” with nutrient pollution being one of the primary concerns.
