The Bay is a highly productive coastal plain estuary; its broad and shallow form provides a unique array of habitats offering protection and sustenan e to over 2,700 migratory and resident animal species. Habitat types through the Chesapeake Bay watershed range from the mixed hardwood forests of the Appalachian mountains to the saltwater marshed of the Bay. These habitats are influenced by the climate, topography, soils, hydrology, plant and animal interactions, and an ever-expanding human population.
