In 1994, the Chesapeake Bay Executive Council called for a set of goals and recommendations for riparian forest protection and restoration. The result of the effort was the adoption of three principal riparian forest buffer goals including a goal to restore 2,010 miles of riparian forest by 2010. The agressive programs led by the US Forest Service and the States led to the achievement of this goal eight years ahead of schedule. The Chesapeake Bay Program has been widely recognized as leading the nation in riparian goal setting and restoration.
