Visit the Chesapeake Bay’s southernmost beach where English colonists first landed

In the spring of 1607, three ships carrying English colonists arrived at Cape Henry along the southern mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, ready to start a new life. Though the colonists only stayed for a few days before heading inland to eventually form the Jamestown Colony, the ships’ “landing” in 1607 marked the first arrival of English settlers in North America. Today, the site of arrival is Virginia's most visited state park. 

First built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, First Landing State Park includes a lush mix of beachfront and forests tucked away from the urban bustle of Virginia Beach. 

The park’s 1.5-mile beach faces calm Chesapeake Bay waves that are perfect for relaxed swimming and walking along the shoreline. Dolphins are a regular sight during the warmer months, as well as shorebirds like sandpipers, willets and plovers. The beach is dog-friendly so don’t forget to bring your pooch if you have one and don’t mind them getting a little wet and sandy.  

Beyond the water, the park features nearly 20 miles of intersecting trails that wind through maritime forests, cypress swamps, and coastal dunes. 

For an easy, scenic loop, the popular Bald Cypress Trail takes hikers over wooden boardwalks and observation platforms suspended directly above dark swamp waters filled with towering cypress trees. If you want to explore the heart of the park on foot or by bike, the Cape Henry Trail spans six miles from one end of the park to the other, cutting through salt marshes and forested paths. Meanwhile, routes like the Long Creek Trail guide visitors toward the park's southern end near the Narrows, offering access to quiet paths along the water's edge. 

If you have time to spare, head to the Cape Henry Lighthouse on the active Fort Story Military Base, or inland to the Pleasure House Point Natural Area. 

With a mix of relaxing beachfront and adventurous hiking trails—plus ample parking, a robust visitor center and cafe— First Landing State Park offers an ideal outdoor experience right along the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay.
