Education Workgroup - All Meetings

This will be more than a meeting. Let’s venture outside of our normal spaces, learn together, and get energized. The day will include guest speakers from Anacostia Parks and Community Collaborative and Ward 8 Woods Conservancy, a short, guided walk in the woods to see the results of community stewardship and access to greenspace, lightning updates on what workgroups are doing, and lots of interaction and conversation about the power of inclusive multiple-benefit efforts.

Purpose:

Experience, witness, and consider the powerful, meaningful impact that can be achieved by connecting land conservation, access to nature, education, programming, stewardship and attention to equity and inclusion.
Infuse new perspectives, spark ideas and inspire discussion around how all of our different lines of work intersect, and how we can increase our collaboration and coordination toward more collective, strategic impact.
Get outside, talk with each other, connect.
Explore how to increase benefits across multiple outcomes by pairing needs and priorities of the community with CBP environmental conservation efforts.

Format: This is primarily an in-person meeting, but all indoor portions of the meeting will be available for virtual participation.

Important Logistics:

Lunch: Bring your own lunch. We wish for the lunch break to be a time for networking, idea sharing, and/or exploration of the museum. There are no facilities to chill or heat food.
Dress: Wear sturdy shoes for our woods walk-and-talk. Please dress for the weather, i.e., raincoats in case of rain, casual attire encouraged.
Parking/Public Transport: The museum has ample free parking. The museum is also accessible via the W3 bus line from Anacostia Station (on the Metro Green Line). The museum is not within walking distance from Anacostia Station.
Security: Please arrive promptly at 10:00am, participants will need to go through museum security and all bags will be checked.

Hybrid Logistics: Indoor portions of this meeting will be hybrid accessible.

The morning session will run from the opening of the meeting at approximately 10:00 am until we transition outdoors with Nathan Harrington at roughly 11:45 am. The hybrid session will then reconvene after lunch from 1:30 pm until 3:30 pm

2020 Chesapeake Bay Environmental Literacy Forum

Day 1 Goals: Demonstrate the value and characteristics of a leaner-centered approach to the Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE). Train new and existing MWEE Ambassadors on developing MWEEs at the classroom and school district levels. Day 2 Goals: Build a shared understanding of the role of MWEE Ambassadors. Create strategies to address gaps and opportunities in state and local environmental literacy efforts.

A big goal for the Education Workgroup and Chesapeake Bay Program as a whole is to increase opportunities for DEIJ in their work around MWEE implementation. The Summer 2019 Chesapeake Bay Program Full Education Workgroup Meeting identified ways that each state and the workgroup as a whole could batter integrate DEIJ into their work. Members of the Diversity Workgroup presented some of the key features from the EJ Screening Tool map that showed potential demographic areas that may serve as areas of focus as we think about MWEE implementation and heard from other workgroup members on the latest MWEE training and professional development opportunities where jurisdictions need support.

2019 Environmental Literacy Leadership Summit

Thursday, June 27, 2019 from 9:30am - 3:30pm

The Summit goals include reaffirming commitments to the 2014 Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement’s Environmental Literacy Goal. Most importantly, the Summit will highlight the challenges and explore possible solutions to the equitable distribution of environmental education resources and opportunities. The Summit will explore systemic environmental education and how it can drive diversity, equity and inclusion. Summit participants will share successful models and have the opportunity to share both challenges and successes encountered when implementing these models on a large scale. Formal and informal discussions will identify strategies that may work within a jurisdiction to provide equitable environmental instruction for all students. All participants will be engaged in identifying specific next step actions by jurisdiction to implement as follow-up to the Summit.

Education Practitioners Forum

The purpose of the Forum was to establish a cadre of Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE) Ambassadors who have the understanding and skills to advocate for and support the development of state and local environmental literacy programming that includes MWEEs. Environmental Education providers from schools and environmental organizations worked together to define and implement the tool from all angles to empower one another to educate their colleagues on MWEE best practices across their jurisdictions.

At the meeting, we will delve into topics related to the Environmental Literacy Goal of the 2014 Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement. Conversations include: how parks are being used to deliver student experiences and how these experiences could be deepened into elements of the Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience, how states are advancing environmental literacy programs at the state and local level, including taking advantage of the Every Student Succeeds Act, and how sustainable school efforts relate to a balanced budget; the healthy and safety of students, faculty, and staff; and college and career readiness of students.
